My girlfriend has an ‘03 Jeep Grand Cherokee with automatic transmission that’s been in her family for several years now. It’s got probably got at least 2 or 300 thousand miles on it given its age. I’ve noticed that it’s had some problems this year and am concerned about it. The most noticeable issue is that it’s a bit of a bumpy ride and it has been that way for the past several years. Plus when you turn it on the warning chime goes off as usual followed by a long chime and a pattern of 3 short chimes with a brief pause. It goes away after a minute and has been that way for several years, but could that mean something’s wrong? Now this year, there’s been a string of problems, 5 weeks ago, the AC was broken and we had to roll the Windows down, then a week later the horn blew a fuse, then the week after that, the car needed to be jump started because the engine wouldn’t even turn on. When the ignition switch was turned to the on position, nothing happened except for some gauges fluttering. A portable jumpstarter didn’t work, and an initial attempt to jump it to another car didn’t work either. A pickup truck briefly got it to turn over and crank with the truck ‘s driver giving it gas. A separate car finally got it to turn over and start after a few attempts to start it, but it was short lived and the car died while pulling out of a parking space. It had to be pushed back into a parking spot, and then jumped again. It was discovered that in order to keep the car from dying, the car would need to be given gas (the accelerator depressed). Thankfully 2 weeks ago the car was fine with no issues. I am however concerned with the recent string of problems. Is the car way overdue on service? Could this mean that the car is on it’s last legs? Or is this just a sign of old age?
I think it’s obvious that the car is ageing badly & is on its last legs. I’d say you got your money’s worth if you got 300,000 miles from a Jeep.
I wouldn’t put much money into it since it’s basically worth nothing now. Just drive it till it falls apart & then junk it.
Buy a Toyota or a Honda next time, if you want the car to age really well.
