Hey Scotty you gotta know that I watch your channel for interest in anything you might be talking about as much as I do for auto advice.
So here I am, a 2003 VW MK4 Diesel Wagon I purchased for touring (I’m a musician), fuel economy, and because I had heard these were friendly for learning how to tool on a car. And I have learned a lot.
I am the second owner, got the car 6 and a half years ago at 217,000 km and it is currently about 360,000. I just paid for my second timing belt job, as my water pump failed after replacing my thermostat (LOL), had front end work about a year ago including the other wheel bearing I hadn’t done and my second passenger side tie rod end since owning it. I Have done regular maintenance including brakes and oil changes along the way and generally think the car pulls its weight, however it will be my last VW for the price and regularity of repairs.
Recently it developed a funny sound that a mechanic friend is convinced is the clutch going, and I must say for the past 2 years I’ve noticed funny shuttering becoming more regular. I’ve been quoted between $1400-$2000 for the repair. How long until something like this leaves me stranded?
I just dropped $1500 on timing belt/water pump 3 months ago. So here is my question, do I walk away at this point considering all the other things that might need doing? It’s not too rusty, but the exhaust will probably need some work, and otherwise the car has really earned its keep. And ya, 45MPG highway and regularly 35-38 city.
Just need an opinion here, thanks so much for taking the time and love the show!!
Best,
Kurt from Victoria, BC
Well it sounds like you're going to need a new clutch. Volkswagen sign cheap to work on but I mean clutches eventually wear out. Find the best deal you can in your area of somebody who knows how to replace a clutch on one
