Hey Scotty, I have a 2004 Ford Explorer 4.6 liter V8 that I got stuck a couple years ago and like an idiot got way too aggressive and messed up my transmission. Now when I put it into gear it feels like it goes into gear, but doesn't move anywhere. When I put it back into park it makes a tick tick tick tick tick sound. Hold the transfer case thinking it could have been the transfer case chain, but everything in there is fine. Wondering if this could possibly be fixed changing transmission fluid and solenoids? Could it possibly be torque converter clutches? May have found same transmission pretty cheap. Would I be better off just swapping Transmissions and if I swap Transmissions do you think I should just swap the torque converter as well?
I would do the transmission and torque converter at the same time. It's hard to say exactly what has happened but your initial reporting of symptoms sounds like bad clutch packs in the transmission. Without tearing down the transmission and looking inside it's hard to say. Do you ever have any issues with the speedometer?

Yep, I would never but in a rebuild, or new, trans without putting in a new torque converter (or known quality rebuilt one).
I never did before this happened, but it has not driven since. Looks like I can get a 2003 Explorer with a blown motor that is identical for $200. 4th through 8th numbers match on the vin #'s. That does mean that the Transmissions will be the same right?
You more than likely broke the shaft inside orrrrr you destroyed the forward drum either or those transmissions are weak i rebuilt many of them and one of the owners beats it up a LOT and he allways brakes a drum a band or the shaft it self
