Can I put a Crown Victoria axle in my Grand Marquis

I have a 2004 MGM that needs a new rear axle assembly (C8 axle code). The base where the springs seat rotted out.

I found a 2011 Rear Axle assembly from a Crown Vic Police interceptor.  It has the 3.27 axle (which I was wanting anyway)

Will this fit my MGM and will the springs from the MGM be compatible?

Thanks for the help.

Will this fit

measure it

It has the 3.27 axle

if the gearing is not what it had, then it's going to throw off your odometer, speedometer, and ABS

With 3.27 ratio, you'll get better acceleration but worse gas mileage.  Why can't you just get new spring mounting plates welded onto your 2.73 axles?

Mechanic said can't be done - those plates are not available. So I'm searching for a junk yard rear axle assembly.

How about swapping the diff innards to keep your axle ratio?

@jake1956 - You can always get a metal shop to make some for you. It's a pretty easy job.  Sounds like your mechanic doesn't want you to do this because it is less money for him.

maybe he doesn't want to do it because the whole car is a rusty mess

No doubt.

I believe the ABS should be OK

It depends. For the rear, some ABS systems used speed sensors on the transmission output rather than the wheel hubs. I think ABS systems may also be comparing overall vehicle speed to individual wheels speed. The PCM also may be confused about the engine output speed versus vehicle speed.

I know for a fact that on my vehicle, changing axle ratio requires reprogramming both the powertrain control module and electronic brake control module. The shift points need to be changed, otherwise the computer will throw transmission fault codes. (it thinks it's slipping). Neither of which the dealer will do, and you'll have a hell of a time finding someone who will do custom programming, and it costs a lot of money.

C8 code indicates a ratio of 2.73:1

That's a pretty drastic change to 3.73. The engine is going to be revving pretty high on the highway, and your fuel economy will suck.

If I'm not mistaken, the C8 code indicates a ratio of 2.73:1

Yes, it is. So will the 3.27 axle through off the ABS as indicated above? First I've heard of that. I can like with the speedo being off.

I'm not certain, but thinking about it the ABS uses sensors mounted at the wheels. The tires will still be rotating at the same speed regardless of the rear axle ratio so I believe the ABS should be OK since it works by detecting wheel spin using those sensors. (Caveat: This is not something I have actually done so this is conjecture on my part.)

These look like spring perches to me

@mmj- RIGHT ON!

it's not hard to find. Me thinks the mechanic is trying to dodge the job
