I’m thinking about buying a 2004 Ford Mustang V6 convertible, but I was wondering what types of potential problems I should be aware of before purchasing?

I have owned over 20 different Mustangs and most have been 99-04. Here are some things to make note of:

1. Does it run hot? Intake gaskets on the V6 models usually become an issue around 120k or so. Just eyeball it and make sure temps stay good.

2. Is the ABS module working fine? If the light is on for traction control, press it to turn it on. If you can not get the light to turn off, your ABS module is out. About $100 to rebuild yours, or $150-$200 to replace with a "new" one.

3. When was the last time the power top fluid was flushed? If it has trouble going up or down, it could need a good flush. It can be done yourself but it is a pain.

4. The headlights fade pretty famously

5. Pop the trunk and check for signs of water in the spare wheel compartment. The trunk gaskets wear out over time and most people don't replace them. Also look around the creases of the trunk for rust as it is a notable spot for issues on those models.

6. Drive it and see if there is any play in the steering. The steering column bearings were cheaply made and a lot of times they go bad. I recently had to install a whole new column on an '01 Cobra. You do NOT want that headache.

7. Is the odometer still visible? The LEDs tend to go out over time

8. The third brake lights typically fade and crack

9. Are the door panels secure or loose? A lot of times they come loose with use over time and have to be re-tightened.

10. Does the radio work? The factory units are notorious for failures. If it has been replaced, check to make sure it was done right.

11. Drivers side seat bolster - usually wears through over time. May want to check that.

12. Are the A/C vents cracked? Are there any signs of an oil brown foam being blown out of them? The insulation in the A/C system will eventually let go and you get greasy brown chunks that pretty much ruin anything they contact with if you don't handle them very carefully. I've lost jeans to that junk.

I think that's about it. The 3.8 V6 is a really good little motor and they can run hundreds of thousands of miles. Down on power, but a great cruiser in drop top form.

Interesting tidbit: Ford changed the displacement ever so slightly for the 04 V6. It is actually a 3.9L V6, not a 3.8L. It was the only year they did that, so OEM parts can be hard to source. It runs as well as the 3.8L did though.
