2004 Toyota 4runner sr5 4wd transmission hunting for gears uphill

As it said above 2004 Toyota 4runner sr5 4wd 120,000 miles. When driving 55 mpg, even using cruise control, my 4runner has a difficult time which gear to use. If the rpms go up to slightly above 2000 rpm it down shifts, when it gets down below 2000 rpms it up shifts, up and down going up the same hill.  Is it me or what? Is my transmission going out?

Thank you,

Sue

What speed is this happening at?

He said 55 mpg, I think he meant 55 miles per hour. What happens when you drive 50 or 60 instead?

Is it any size hill? or just very steep hills? When going uphill that puts more load on the vehicle, and you're trying to maintain the same speed (55 using cruise control), it's likely unable to do so and why it's hunting for gears.

We had an older Pathfinder (yeah when Nissan made good trucks) did the same thing. Whenever we hit a hilly section of highway; I had to get it going a little bit faster on the downhill portion so that it wouldn't peeter out on the uphill side or hunt for gears trying to maintain constant speed.
