Hey Scotty, we have a bmw X5 engine that was lately rebuild. It is turning over but not starting. We installed a new crankshaft sensor while the old camshaft sensors are working. The original fuel pump got seized due to stale gas as the vehicle was parked for 10yrs as it got into an accident with water getting into the engine, so as of now it has fuel pump set up just to start the car. There is power coming to the fuel injectors. There is continuity from the inigition coil wiring harness to the computer box plug. The problem is, sometimes we get a spontaneous spark to the spark plugs and then no spark at all and there is low pulsing light on the test light as we crank the engine testing the ignition coil wiring harness. I would like to hear your advice on that!
Crank no start in a German car especially bmw and Mercedes can be hell to diagnose. You have to just go down the list. Check fuel pressure, battery, cam and crank position sensor and harness. All fuses and relays and ECU/ pcm. Check all connections, contacts and wiring. Also check your timing. It does not matter if parts are new or worked before. It only matters now. German car parts can fail or start failing in a blink of a eye and new parts doesn't mean it works. It could just be newly broken. I've had German car parts fail minutes after install.
okay thanks, i have check the fuses and all seem to be working, i am just wondering does the 2005 bmw x5 have a ballast resistor that controls the voltage to the ignition coil or does it have a ignition control module? I have checked for continuity from the ignition coil harness to the ecu harness and none of the wires are broken
Modern car... Everything is controlled by cars computer and yes there are relays for your vehicle. I forgot how many. I think it's 4 or 5 . They are usually found in both the glove box and trunk When you crank car what exactly is happening. Is it turning over but just not starting. Its is clicking, making washing machine noise. Try to describe best you can.
Sorry didn't see that other post. Check your starter and all ground wires. Make sure the timing isn't off.
Yeah I believe it's like a washing machine just turning over. We checked the new spark plugs and they are the same way. We tested the injectors and they were clogged, so I hope that is the problem. What I found strange though is that I connected a test light to the positive post of the car and was checking for ground on the connectors for ignition coil and it doesn't light up but when I placed it to the power wire it lights up. I know a test light lights up on power Wire when you're connected to ground but this does lights up when I am connected to the positive post..
Where did you get this rebuilt BMW? How much did you pay on this? You need a BMW specialty mechanic- whoever worked on this vehicle has probably never worked on a BMW before.
It is a customer's vehicle here in Guyana South America, we don't have BMW specialist here, My dad and brother are mechanics and this is their first time working on a bmw. They got the job because another mechanic could not fix the vehicle, as the it was parked for 10 yrs after being in accident resulting in water in the engine that caused it to seize, so they had to order a lot of parts for it. The thing is, as we crank the engine, there is only on and off spark, so the vehicle doesnt start.
