Dear Scotty i have a 2005 dodge Dakota st 3.7 4x4 automatic with 124500 miles on it.

Vin Number 1D7HW22K45S253111

The other Day i got a gas cap message on my odometer so i replaced the cap with a locking one and cranked it to verify all was well and it was. Went out this morning to leave turned the switch and nothing no lights not a thing. Checked the battery it was 12.57 volts. Got back in truck tried again and red security light come on in top right corner. This truck does not have a security system with a key fob. It is just a regular key. Can you think of what could possibly this be? i have tried unhooking battery and draining the system and still same thing. When i put the key back in it has red light which in my book says key immobilizer. This thing is getting on my nerves one thing after another. Please tell me you have an idea before i have to pay an alarm and a leg at local dealer! 🙁

Thanks

Scotty

I don't think this is a problem created by the SKIS because of the system description.

SENTRY KEY IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM
The Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) is designed to provide passive protection against unauthorized vehicle use by disabling the engine after about two seconds of running.

You aren't even getting any dash lights when you turn the key to the RUN position and that has nothing to do with the SKIS system or its SKREEM module (Sentry Key REmote Entry Module).

The reason the Security Light might be illuminated is because the SKREEM (module) ((like the dash)) gets power through the ignition switch. If you look at the top of this wiring diagram you see that the SKREEM gets an ignition switch output voltage in RUN-START and that means through the ignition switch.

And the Major Components list for the VTSS (Vehicle Theft Security System) also lists the ignition switch.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that the ignition switch is necessarily faulty. I'm saying that the ignition switch would be a good place to troubleshoot this.

I think it's time to see if that 12.57 battery voltage is making it to the ignition switch (there's at least three 40 amp fuses providing it on different circuits) and if it is making it to all the ignition switch contacts, if it's making it out of the ignition switch on all the wires it's supposed to in the RUN-START key positions.

Here's a case where if you want to troubleshoot this yourself, and after you checked every fuse involved with the Ignition Switch, SKREEM, and Cluster, you'd want to buy a subscription to either ALL DATA DIY or MITCHELL1 DIY and get the ignition switch pinout. You can test if it's getting the input and providing the output voltages with a $10 test light.

Load test your alternator and battery.  If it's not charging properly or if the battery isn't holding a proper charge, your problem will reoccur.

Thank you but it want even crank i had my charger on it and it did not alert me to anything.
I have never had any special keys is there a way to temp disable it? Thanks so much
