2005 matrix oil burning

Topic starter

I have a 2005 Toyota matrix with 233,000 on it. I was hoping to keep it for a long time since I didn't think it was burning oil but it is burning oil. It burns oil when I drive it on the beltway around town and I have to have my foot in the gas a lot.

I don't want to put any more money into this car but I want to know what you guys think about your favorite oil additive for an oil burning engine with high miles. I'm not a big mechanic in the bottle kind of guy but now I kind of am looking due to high mileage and oil burning

Any assistance is greatly appreciated I appreciate you guys! Thank you!

Most of us here will tell you that oil additives are useless snake oil. There is no additive that will cure an oil-burning engine. You could try replacing your PCV valve to see if that helps.

Forget additives, they won't help.

Let's assume the cause of your oil burning is sticking rings. There are 2 'inexpensive routes' you could try to remedy the situation and neither involves traditional oil additives.

The first would be to use a bottle of ATS 505 oil treatment. You must follow the directions exactly for this to work effectively. Scotty's video trying ATS 505 treatment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-babZWqH34

The second option, according to Lake Speed's tests, would be to change over to Valvoline's Restore & Protect motor oil. Here's @oskool 's video link starting with Lake Speed's conclusion: https://youtu.be/-IDvx1LtqVM?t=490

Check the PCV valve as @chucktobias suggested before doing either of the above.

Valvoline Restore and Protect motor oil claims to clean varnish and carbon deposits. It's supposed to clean slowly over multiple oil changes to prevent clogging up the oil filter.

One possibility would be the ATS Carbon Clean product that Scotty recommends. This is not an additive in the sense of something like STP, but rather is a cleaner designed to remove carbon from your engine. It may help if your oil burning problem is caused by oil control rings stuck due to carbon buildup.

@chucktobias okay I can look into that. Thank you.

Also please note, this post got duplicated because of website connectivity issues. I did not post the question two times intentionally

No problem, just making you aware of it. More typically dupes caused by site lag are just a minute or two apart.

@chucktobias Hi hope you're having a good week. I finally got around to getting the pcv fixed. Old valve was still jingly, but I bought a new one. Went to put the hose back on and it broke apart in the parking lot of Advanced. Put it back together with Duct Tape and ordered the molded hose on ebay for $14. Also, I put in 3/4 qt of Duralube.

Im taking notes here regarding the cleaners, too.

Engine runs much quieter w/the Duralube I noticed.

At any rate, that's the update. I'll have to drive the car more to check on any oil loss.

Car still seems to lag some and I feel I have to really put my foot in the pedal to make it go.

Just had work done on cooling system. I dont have a garage, so cannot do stuff like coolant/AC.

Have a good day and I'll be back later.

Thank you,
Mark O'Brien
