I have a 2005 Mitsubishi Endeavor LS, 174,000 miles. I was driving and gave it some gas to speed up to get on the highway when I heard a sound like metal clank then it wod not go as if the transmission went out or slipped. I pulled over and put it in park turned it off then I restarted the the SUV then put it in drive. The transmission went in to drive, gave it some gas and as it was going into 2nd gear it slipped out of gear again and would not go. I pulled over again put it into park then tried putting it into gear again. Same thing happened again slipped out or gear when it was trying to go into 2nd gear again. What could be causing this to happen? The transmission is only about 7-8 months old. The guy I bought it from had a new transmission put in it before I bought the suv..

It is an automatic transmission and the fluid level is fine but the fluid was red and black. It did not smell burnt or anything.

Sound like the transmission is acting up. When you said, the previous owner put a new transmission, you mean the rebuilt one? Mitsubishi is notorious for weak transmission.Take the car to a transmission shop for a diagnosis.

The transmission is shot. The previous owner may well have installed a "new" transmission from a junkyard. Either that or the rebuild has failed. Was any warranty paperwork provided for the "new" transmission?

We're talking about an 18-year-old Mitsubishi. It has already exceeded its expected lifespan.
