Should I buy this 2005 Toyota RAV4 AWD?

Hi I’ve recently learned that even in good cars there badly modeled engines. There’s a 2005 rav 4 for 5850 with 157000 miles. Is there anything I should be mindful of before I purchase it?

You're asking about potential engine problems but did not mention the engine in the vehicle you are considering. If it has the 2.4L 2AZ-FE 4-cylinder engine those are prone to oil burning.

Of course there are many things to be mindful of when buying a used car, especially one whose age is measured in decades. Before purchasing any used vehicle you need a good mechanic to give it a thorough examination before purchase. (Afterwards is too late.)

@chucktobias I think this was before they put the loose fitting rings in them, that started in 2007 I think. Reviews from owners don't mention burning oil, overall very well rated.

As you said, it is quite old, so could have hidden issues.

The price seems a tad high to me, unless it is in really good condition.

@nlord id add a picture if I knew how but it’s looks like it’s hardly been driven and the engine looks brand new. Because it’s Toyota I’m willing to spending the 6k. I can’t go for a ford, or Nissan, cause those also have subcompact suv in this price range but the reviews are not so good.

@nlord Good call, I did a quick search but didn't see a definite start year for the oil burning problem. Aside from that issue whether the vehicle in question is any good at this point is going to depend on what's been done to it over the last 20 years. Could be very good or could be a disaster waiting to happen.

@chucktobias I looked it up a bit, and it looks like the oil burners started when they changed the camry model in 2007. Sad to see how car makers trying to follow epa and get better gas mileage, drops the reliability of cars.
