I am the proud owner of a 2006 Honda CR-V. It's a 2 wheel drive, coming up on 200,000 miles. It needs alot of work. Ive owned it for about 4 years and it wasn't very well taken care of when I got it. In the 4 years I've owned it I've only had to change out the radiator fan and the starter, which was quite expensive to change due to it's placement. It's got 2 serious issues right now, one is that it is leaking oil from somewhere in the front behind where the belt is, and the other is a front end shake when you brake. I have it parked right now and it's gonna stay parked so as not to do anymore damage to it. It leaks alot of oil. As far as the wheel shake I took it for an alignment and the guy tried to tell me it was because my wheels are bent. I have 22's on it and I know it ain't the wheels because it shook before the wheels. He aligned it as best he could do he says and it was better but not perfect. Now it's back to shaking bad. I was thinking of making it a project car and rebuilding it. I really love it. Are these engines worth rebuilding? I heard they aren't from a guy at my job. It's a 4 cylinder. I was thinking of having the engine rebuilt and while the engine was out, having the front end rebuilt. What all would that entail? Any ideas what that work would cost? It probably will cost more than it's worth to do but it I want to keep it. It has sentimental value to me and I can save and have it done when I got all the cash together. What do you guys think? What all has to be done to the front end? What might be the cause of the shake? Thanks guys for any help.
You REALLY shouldn't have 22's on that, try going back to stock for a week then report back.
Also make sure that leak isn't coming from the valve cover gasket. If not then you're looking at a headache job.
Unless you're rebuilding the engine yourself & know what you're doing it's not worth it.
Thanks. I know that 22s don't belong on it, it rides like a brick. It does look good doing it though. It also did that before the wheels so it ain't the wheels. I can't see where oil is leaking. I'm gonna take it to the car wash and wash the engine so I can try to spot the leak. I think I can find someone to do the rebuild, but is it worth it? Will the rebuild last? A guy at work said he had one of those engines rebuilt and it lasted 250 miles and went out. Thanks for the comment.
If you're going to put a new engine in buy a reman or the jdm equivalent with low miles(30k or less).
Right after cleaning add oil specific uv leak dye, you'll find the source much quicker. Should be between $11-$15 for the kit on amazon.
Did you go to the shop & have it aligned with the stock rims as well? If you keep significantly larger wheels on it's going to beat the heck out of just about everything from brakes to steering & suspension not to mention the trans. Personally I'd sell em then if you REALLY want aftermarket don't go 1"-2" larger than stock.
The other stuff might be low cost relatively speaking but it adds up & that trans, essh.
Essentially it's making a money pit out of something that shouldn't be unless you're in the rust belt.
