Hi:
I have a 2006 Toyota Matrix. Recently, I pulled the protective steel shield loose at one of its anchor points,
which was a nut embedded in a receptacle attached to fuel tank strap. Apparently, to fix the problem properly, I will have to install a new revised fuel tank strap with a nut welded to it instead of a part identical to the original. Have you ever encountered this problem, and do you have any advice about how best to fix the problem? Thanks for your time and attention.
Hi:
My successful fix turned out to be both inexpensive, easy, and actually an improvement over the original, imho:
I bought a nice brass expansion shield that fit into the rubber receptacle that formerly held an embedded steel nut.
Then I held the shield steady with a wrench while carefully threading in a new stainless steel hex cap screw/bolt with a washer. Tightened enough but not so much as to tear out. A thin rubber/nylon spacing washer forced into the inevitable washer-to-cap screw gap finished the job. Utterly steady and rattle-free. And it will take a long, long time to rust away like the old plain steel parts did. I'm delighted.
