My grandmother's AC has a issue that occurs almost rarely, the AC does not work when you turn it on, then 15-20 minutes of driving it starts blowing cold, She has had many issues with her AC in the past but they have been fixed, i'm not sure if its the stupid automatic AC compressor shut off keeping the compressor off or if its a bad valve. (it has 203k miles on it and its falling apart)

So many things can go wrong with AC systems but it doesn't work at all and all of a sudden it starts working that's electronic failure and cars are so complex today those Fords are all computer run and as you say the car is falling apart you might just live without it or get another car. But start by having a good mechanic analyze the AC electronic system with a scan equipment
