2007 Ford Freestyle EVAP Codes

BACKGROUND

My elderly father has a 2007 Freestyle we use to drive him to appointments.  On my policy as a second vehicle, liability only.  I drive it once a week to keep the battery charged, circulate fuel/oil/tires, etc.  AC stopped working last year, likely an evaporator leak.   No emissions checks in Florida.

Obviously, don't want to sink a lot of $ into it, but want to make sure EVAP codes are not going to cause more problems down the road if it's something I can easily repair myself. I repaired my own cars (carb rebuilds, front main seal, clutch, plugs/oil, heater cores, brakes, etc.) when I was in high school with the help of old school paperback Chilton's manuals.  Can't seem to find one for this vehicle.

QUESTIONS

1. What is most likely the cause and it is something easily replaced?  I've seen conflicting info that the solenoid is located in the engine compartment and some under the right rear fender next to canister.  Gas cap seems OK.

Thanks in advance,

Elvis

I would replace the gas cap to be safe. What I would check next is the Vent control valve.

It's for an Escape, but it might help you out in your troubleshooting.
