I have a 2007 Pontiac G6 2.4 liter with 156,000 miles. it runs very well, no codes, timing chains in good shape, variable valve timing system in good shape, no transmission problems. I have a whining or friction noise at higher rpm’s above 4500 rpm or when i’m at 2k-3k rpm and step on the gas. i trust my mechanic and he said the idler pulley was rusty and cleaned it off. he said it may take a little while for the noise to go away. i trust what he said but I just want your opinion. is there a way I can make the noise go away?

I have a 2007 Pontiac G6 2.4 liter with 157,000 miles. it doesn’t burn a drop of oil, transmission is in great shape, no codes. But whenever the car is under load or acceleration I hear a bearing noise over 3500-4000 rpm. I also hear the noise if i’m coasting and i press the gas, and the noise happens for a brief few seconds until i let off the throttle. My mechanic said it is the idler pulley, but I also had the serpentine belt tensioner replaced a few months ago. I have also had a random misfire code p0300 before, but haven’t had one since. Sometimes there is a little bit of a rough idle but nothing else is wrong. Could it be my idler pulley is starting to go out?

It's easy enough to find out. Take the belt off and spin the idler pulley. It should glide smoothly and not hang up at all. If it hangs up or binds, replace it with an OEM one.

I have a 2007 pontiac g6 2.4 157,000 miles. doesn’t burn any oil and is in very good shape i’m only the 2nd owner. a few months ago I had a p0300 misfire code and I occasionally have a rough idle but no misfire since. above 4,000 rpm’s i hear a grinding or bearing noise or under full load for a couple seconds. i have no charging or starting issues, just seems to be the bearing inside the alternator. my mechanic said it could be the alternator bearing as he didn’t have time to fully diagnose it. could this be the bearing inside?

Purchase a mechanic's stethoscope and see what the issue is. If it's the alternator, replace it.

try taking off your serpentine belt and rotate the alt pulley by hand. See how it feels.

Well replace the bearing then in that clean it isn't going to fix a worn bearing they whine when they are worn inside

I have a 2007 pontiac g6 2.4 liter ecotec automatic with 156,000 miles. i hear a bearing noise at higher rpm’s and when under full load. my mechanic said its the idler pulley, but I just had the tensioner replaced a few months ago. are these part of the same assembly? I also had a random misfire code p0300 with a rough idle. it’s been fine but recently it’s been running rough at idle again and I hear a chirping noise. is this most likely the idler pulley? there’s nothing else wrong with the car.

are these part of the same assembly?

No, not usually. The tensioner pulley is usually separate from the idler pulley. In my 1999 Ranger for example, the tensioner pulley is near middle of the different pulleys. The the alternator is farthest to the passenger side and the idler pulley is the next closest one.

You should be able to change it yourself, as long as you have a torque wrench. The biggest potential pain in slipping the belt back on.

Update: Having been made aware that the idler and tensioner are the same, did you use an OEM part? Chinese aftermarket stuff isn't the best for pulley systems.

The shop manual shows only the tensioner pulley on that engine, no idler.

Interesting, didn't know that one. Thanks.

Looks one heck of a lot easier to replace as well, my drive belt snakes all over the place and is a pain to get fully off and put back on.

I have a 2007 Pontiac G6 2.4 with 157,000 miles. it doesn’t burn any oil, shifts smooth, runs great with no codes, no weird noises or smells. The engine timing is spot on and is responsive. Back several months ago it had a random misfire code p0300. Every couple months it randomly idles somewhat rough but never stays. Haven’t had the p0300 since. The car drives so well and you would never suspect anything. It has new VVT solenoids and camshaft position sensor, drive belt tensioner and catalytic converter. This is a very minor and rare problem but i’m curious as to what could cause an uneven idle so rarely but still happens.
