2007 silverado 1500 with the 5.3 just about 82,000 miles. Last changed oil at 80,000 with Castrol high mileage GTX. It has been about 2k miles since the last oil change and the dipstick reads just over 1/2 a quart low. I just topped it off. I change the oil and filter every 3k miles religiously.
I know it is normal for any engine to consume a small amount of oil but 1/2 a quart seems a bit too much in just 2 thousand miles (mostly city driving). Is the engine burning the oil or is this normal? no known history of oil burning.

It's not normal, but unfortunately your Silverado engine uses the flawed AFM, and excessive oil consumption is one of the symptoms. Unfortunately, the problem gets much, much worse from here. It might be time to trade for something else.

ugh, i forgot about that. is there a simple way to de-activate that system or is the engine doomed?
at this point, a delete might delay the camshaft from getting chewed to bits, but you cannot reverse the piston damage and oil burning. Details are in the link I provided.
The engine is burning oil but it is not much for an old car (1 quart for 4000 miles).
