I did my routine oil change in December on my 2010 2.4L Honda Accord sedan and noticed the oil that I emptied out was really dark. Since then, I have had to put just under 2 quarts in additionally to keep the oil level stable. I used Castrol Edge and a Mobil 1 filter. Seeing that I have only driven about 3,000 miles, it seems a bit excessive to be adding. I bought the car a little over 2 years ago and thought the CarFax seemed to track the maintenance really well. But I put a bit of highway mileage on it since then and now am thinking the engine was a lot dirtier than I originally thought. Is this normal for a Honda that is now 14 years old or should I try cleaning the engine a bit? The engine only has about 66,500 on it but it is getting slightly older. Any input would be appreciated!
Simplest things are to change the PCV valve and check for leaks. If that doesn't do it the oil control rings may be stuck due to carbon buildup in which case the ATS Carbon Clean product that Scotty recommends may help.
If none of that helps then you likely have excessive engine wear.
