Hey scotty, love your channel, i got a 2010 Toyota Rav4 with 149,xxx kilometers, I-4 2AR-FE motor. It burns oil, about half a liter or so between oil changes (every 5000kms with full synthetic 5w20 oil) i know these engines were built incorrectly bui was wondering if i use a heavier weight oil like 5w30 if it would help. I did this with my 2010 subaru wrx (went from 5w30 to 5w40) and it didn't burn oil. Also what do you think about using a high performance oil with the same oil weight, such as Motul or redline instead of regular synthetic oil?
Do not use heavier oils because you will mess up with VVT system and it cost you a fortune to fix. It does not burn that much oil and as Scotty always says, Oil is cheap and engine is expensive. Just keep your eye on oil level. btw, you change the oil too soon, change it every 8000 km (5k miles).
Scotty is clear about this: Use the correct oil. Anything else will damage other parts of the engine, such as the camshaft, timing belt, etc., as well as burden the catalytic converter and gum up the oil holes in the pistons.
If it's burning oil, you should probably change oil MORE often, not less. See here:
