Good morning Scotty, I recently purchased a 2010 Toyota 4Runner sr5 that has no power to the rear liftgate to open it even with key inserted, the rear window doesn’t roll down, the rear wiper doesn’t work or the defogger.

I pulled up an error code DTC B1287 which says back door communication stop.

i replaced the rear ECU multiplex module and I still have the same issues. I called the dealer and they told me it may need to be programmed but they are also unsure if the part is programmable. I received varying answers from the mechanics I have brought it too and now I am at a loss. What should I do? Thanks!!

Yep, … that’s a 4Runner for you! I bet you haven’t checked the tailgate (and the window) for operation before buying it, right?

Anyway, … it’s a very expensive fix if it’s more than just wiring, … notorious problem with 4Runners tailgates. Is tailgate rusted a lot? Trace the wiring very, very carefully, … grounding especially, and hope that’s all it is. fwiw

I did check the rear but the previous owner thought it was the ECU because of the code, I did take the rear apart and no rust is evident except in the rear wiper blade assembly. A mechanic did see rodent droppings in the middle of the engine bay so I’m guessing there may be a wire chewed somewhere sadly. Do you know if the rear multiplex needs to be programmed or is it plug and play? Thanks for the diagram!

Hopefully some critters didn't dine on the wiring. That'd be my 1st guess if the rear ecu didn't cure it.

The mechanic did see rodent droppings in the engine bay so I’m now looking for any chewed up wires hoping I can find them before having a mechanic inspect all the wires for who knows how much
