Hello Scotty, love your youtube channel. I have a question, my neighbor's (who just passed away) family is selling a 2010 Toyota Matrix with 90K miles for $8K firm. I wondering if this is a good buy for my daughter who is going away to college in Nashville, TN. We are from NJ. Wondering if it is worth the money with 90K miles. The car has been garaged 95% of its life. The owner bought the car 11 years ago when he was 75. Oil changes and required maintenance done by Toyota. Wondering if I am better looking for something newer for the $8K. (i.e. Nissan Altima) Although, I keep circling back to he was the original owner, did not beat on the car, pretty much always garaged, but the car is also the base model (i.e. no sunroof, etc.). If I did purchase the car, the hope would be that it would last the next 4 years, to get my daughter through college.  I am estimating around 12K miles per year.  Thank you for your time and consideration, Michael

Clarification: Does it have the 1.8L I4 or the 2.4L I4 engine?

Thank you for the reply. I will have to find out what engine it has.

He said that it is the base model so therefore it would have the 1.8.

Jump on that car. A Matrix with the 1.8 engine will last forever. Forget about the Altima, it will fall apart on you. It sounds like you found a deal of a lifetime.

Which engine does it have? The bigger one is known to burn oil. The 1.8 doesn't have that problem. What are similar cars in your market selling for? It could be a good call as long as the car checks out.

Thank you for the reply. I will have to find out which engine it has, guessing the 1.8L, but I will find out. I was unaware that the 2.4L oil burning problem. I searched Craigslist, Marketplace, and autotempest, very few listings for Toyota Matrix. When looking nationally, the $8K seems the going price. Just not familiar with the Matrix and Toyota brand. Toyotas seem to have high resale value even compared to Nissan of equivalent size, mileage, and year.

See below:  hopefully it’s not the 2.4L, or if it is, hopefully it was already repaired by Toyota.

i would buy it, being a one owner and you know that it was taken care of, we inherited my father-in-law's matrix when he passed, he loved it, we love it, me/daughter/niece are fighting over it now lol

2009, 1.8L, 72k miles, i think it is worth $7-$8000

Don't buy it, that gen of the Matrix was a pile of crap with the oil-burning 2.4 L 4 cylinder engine. If you want a Matrix, look at the first-gen matric because those were solid built and they can run forever.

If OP is looking at the 1.8L version, then he is fine.

If a professional mechanic checks it out thoroughly before purchase & gives you the green light, go right ahead!

It’ll probably last a lot more than 4 yrs, from what you describe of the previous owner..

All the best!
