2011 Honda Accord needing engine replacement?

Hi Scotty,

I purchased my 2011 Honda Accord EXL V6 3.5 L automatic transmission from my grandmother, who purchased it new. It currently has 99,000 miles.

The thing has been impeccably maintained and recently left my son and I stranded 3 hours from home. The vehicle started shuddering and the engine light was blinking. It threw a cylinder misfire code.

We got it to a mechanic in the town we broke down in and he says it needs a complete engine replacement. We got it home and my local independent Honda mechanic says the same. They are both independently citing an unfixed TSB 12-087, faulty piston rings leading to excess oil consumption. I’ve heard you talk about this with the similar age Camry, but not Accord.

Do you have any experience with this issue on the Hondas? Honda Corporate and the Dealer won’t help us, so wonder if it’s worth just changing the spark plugs more often and topping off oil or trading in. Engine replacement isn’t a financial option (got two quotes of $7k)

Did you check the engine to see if it has any oil in it? If the engine is locked up due to the lack of oil lubrication, unfortunately, the only options would be install a new engine or rebuild the current one, which both are expensive.

Was the $7K for a new engine replacement (New Engine) or at a "Machine Shop" that re-builds engines.

A Good Machine Shop (Place that re-builds engines) is sometimes the best way to go if that is the case...

The engine did have some oil when we broke down, but not much. We were still 2,000 miles from “needing” an oil change, and I had no idea it burned oil until now. I do know how to check the oil now and am keeping an eye on the level.

The $7k engine quote was for a rebuilt “generic” Japanese engine with 83,000 miles on it.
