Clunking noise when slowing down

Hi Scotty,

I've got a 2011 Toyota Matrix, 205k, that I've been taking care of (First car, so I'm learning a lot, especially with your help). Recently, it's started making a clunking noise when slowing down at freeway speeds. Sounds like when you change gears on a lathe; moving from one to another as the lathe winds down. The frequency of the clunks slows as the car slows. Doesnt happen unless I'm over 100km/h and am braking (not hard braking, just standard). It also rattles the steering wheel in time with the clunking.

I've checked the brakes fully and all bushings, and struts.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Best,

Josh

try shifting into Neutral , and then slowing down. Does it still clunk?

(do this in a safe place away from traffic like an empty mall parking lot)

@imperator. Tried this in the wee hours this morning and yes it does, though not as much. This may be due to me not being able to fully get up to speed. I was only able to get it to 100km/h. It's a lot more noticeable at 120km/h. But yes, it still makes the clunking sound.

well something is loose. Can you reproduce the clunk by using all your weight to rock the front of the car up and down?

@imperator i rocked the car, both front and back, and it did not reproduce the sound

It can be hard to find the origin of some noises. Scotty has suggested using a device similar to this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy5nqh3LSs4
