2012 Chevy Sonic LS (59k miles) - Whistling/Screeching noise coming from inside the engine.

Hi,

I had taken my car into the dealership because it was squirting oil on top of the engine.

They said it was the valve cover and apparently replaced it.  However, after getting my vehicle back, the engine was a lot louder and was making this whistling/screeching noise.

I took it back the next day and was told that they did not hear anything and that I was imagining things. I have video proof from my security cameras showing the difference in the engine sound before and after taking it to the dealer.

Shortly after that, the check engine light would come on right after starting it.  My scanner said it was cylinder 4 misfiring.  It seemed to happen more when starting it when it was cold out.  Anyways, I took it to an independent mechanic.  He said the engine had all sorts of strange "gunk" on the inside of it.  He cleaned it up, tuned it up (new wires, spark plugs), and flushed the fuel line. He also tested the vacuum system and did not find any leaks but the pressure was off.  He noted that the noise seemed to be coming from inside the engine.

Unfortunately, he was not able to resolve the noise or engine light (cylinder 4 misfire issue).  The misfire issue did seem to go away shortly after the weather warmed up and I switched to premium gas.  I don't know if that is actually helping and if the misfire issue will return when the it gets colder again.

Any ideas on what may be causing the noise and/or the misfiring?

Thank you for your help.

-Paul

P.S. Video of the before and after sound of my car engine.  Please excuse any profanity as I was very upset with the dealer and how they treated me.

You want to isolate where the noise is coming from.

It's easy. Rig up an engine noise "megaphone".

Eric O demonstrates how to do that:
