2012 sonata hybrid shut down

My wifes 2012 sonata hybrid with 58000 miles shut down at 20 mph and locked the steering up, could have been a major problem. The dealership had it for 10days and found the ig1 relay was not activating. My question is, do you think I should contact the ntsb due to the steering being locked while the car was still in motion or is it just a waste of time?

should contact the ntsb

No. The NTSB handles things like commercial transport and infrastructure. Not related. The government branch that licenses vehicle manufacturers is called the NHTSA.

Sure, you can file a complaint. It's a good idea. Just go to nhtsa.gov and there's a claim button right at the very top of the page.

If it ends up being just regular breakdown, and not a common defect, then nothing will come of it though.

locked the steering up

It could not have "locked", you just lost power steering.

I had a similar issue with a friend's 2013 Corolla - the steering would suddenly become incredibly stiff (in the case of the Corolla it was a bad EPS ECU)

Sure, you should file a complaint with NHTSA.

just a waste of time?

It is an 11 year old niche car, I doubt anyone will look into - but filing a complaint doesn't take much time.

ig1 relay

This is quite major, this fuse/relay should not blow.

The IG1 fuse protects the entire fuse box, if I remember correctly it's like 40 amps -

it's not something that should just blow for no reason!
