Scotty,

I have a 2012 Toyota Highlander FWD with 95,585 miles. Then automatic liftgate partially opens and closes by using push buttons or the key FOB but will not fully open or close. I have checked the disable button in the glove box and it is in the pushed (enabled) position. Also I have tried trouble shooting the problem using these steps but the problem still remains.

1) Put rear hatch in off mode via glove compartment button(off is with button in out position)
2) Open hatch manually all the way
3) With hatch opened fully, press and hold rear latch button until you hear 4 quick beeps
4) Place hatch back in on position via the glove compartment button.
5) Attempt to open hatch with fob, rear lift gate button or front dash button

I've determined that the key FOB button, driver side liftgate button and the button located at the liftgate actuate the motor when they are depressed. The motor only moves the liftgate to open or close partially from either the open or closed positions. My next step is to try to repair the motor myself. I've have priced an aftermarket actuator motor and it runs about $600. Is this a repair or replacement I can do myself or should I take it to a mechanic?

Thank,

Ruben Gonzalez

Take it to an independent mechanic.  You don't know if it's the motor or the switch on the fob or some limiting switch within the mechanism itself.  No need to spend $600 on a new motor if that's not the problem.
