So a few months back my girl got into a pretty gnarly car accident head on into a power pole. Now I've replaced the whole front end. 2800 dollars and lots of headache later it's all put back together.Β

Now the weird thing is that it won't go into reverse. I shifted down to sport and back up and got it earlier in the day then went to drive it again and I got nothing. I'm getting a flashing wrench where the gear selection is on the dash. Anybody think the computer needs a reflash? Some forums were talking about the DSG needs to be reflashed.Β

Get it scanned with a high level scan tool, one that can read transmission system codes (or even better, a full system scanner - as on many VWs the shifter is considered "steering wheel electronics") - not a regular OBD-II system.

This is probably not the case here, but in general on most European market VWs with the 7 speed DRY clutch- it's super common for both reverse and sixth gear to quit because of c****y forks - But I think the Golf unlike the Polo GTI had a different gearbox then the dry clutch.Β Also a common thing for VWs also break is the shifter, this was also most common on the dry clutch - not so common on the dual wet clutch used on the Golf.

The fact it is showing you a wrench, that's good - the car knows something is wrong. It could be worse, the car could think everything is working correctly and that'd be a true nightmare.Β Also, the fact it's showing you a wrench and not a gear (not sure if the old GTI made such a distinction but they have been making it for a while), might also be a good indication.

Have it scanned with the proper tool, and take a picture of the scan results and feel free to post it here - of all of the results and car's systems, we'll decipher what's wrong. if nothing is wrong, go to Live data on the tool and see what the gear the gear selector thinks it is when you go use the shifter.

Take it to AutoZone and get the code(s) scanned.Β  Be careful how you park.Β
