2013 Nissan Altima 3.5S has 138000 miles they want 4700. would this be a good buy? Having a hell of a time trying to find something. Thank you for the feedback.
Try looking for a Toyota Camry. Avoid the 2007-2009 model year Camrys with the 2.4L 2AZ-FE engine because they burn a ton of oil. But any other year range of Camrys is a good choice. You should be able to find some good ones for around $5000.
Nope, transmission will be going out soon.
No, it’s not worth it.
The transmission on those is a Jatco CVT and they’re an unreliable mess.
If it’s a manual, and I haven’t seen many with a manual, then its a slightly different story but they do generally have plenty of other issues too.
Just curious as to what other issues are they prone to have?
In the states the only option is a CVT Automatic
Look the Jatco JF010E is officially rated to last 90,000miles (150,000km, yes that’s the official figure given by the manufacturer) but I’ve seen them typically last to 120,000 miles (200,000km).
Everything is wrong on this transmission,
I’ve seen them slip and the belt get stretched before 30,000 miles (and that was on a light economy car! (Renault Meganè 3)). You can use reinforced belts and special software that makes the car feel very slow and the shifting very bad but they still do stretch their belts and that’s one hell of a job to replace.
But perhaps the worst issue on those is the oil pump valve getting stuck making the car underivable and massively increasing the wear on the transmission (when replacing don’t use the OEM one, they’re worse then Chinese knock-offs)
These transmissions are very prone to developing whining from dirty oil (just shows you the quality)
Steeper motors seize up locking the gearbox in a high gear
Valve bodies wear from untimely oil chances and cost a fortune to rebuild…
Last time I have ordered a new one it was about 3,000 dollars only in parts, so they’re also not cheap to replace.
And don’t even bother with a used one! - they all wear out that fast and all of them have major issues by the time they reach 100,000 miles.
(And as far as jatco CVTs go that’s not even the worse… that prestigious award goes to the JF015E, they usually wont last you 90,000 miles.)
@R4nier Everything is a weak point. there isn’t a single thing that’s not prone to break on those. (Maybe expect the computer, have seen a lot of computer issues but the computer it self usually tends to last the lifetime of the gearbox) The JF010E and JF011E used in the 2013 model year Altimas are just a joke!
(They last 125,000-150,000 miles depending on the exact model, but I’ve seen them have belt snaps or completely brick themselves before 90,000 miles)
but they’re significantly better then the JF015E that’s what they used in the Nissan Juke and Lada Vesta 🤣
That’s strange I will admit the 4 cylinders have more of a prone to belt slip and judder concerns more frequently but the v6 versions I see far more seldom fail in the Altima’s I see them regularly with 150-200k+ miles without concern and aside from the cvt those 3.5’s are pretty bulletproof they had a year stretch with head gasket concerns but aside from that the 3.5 engine is one of the least problematic ones out there.
Yes the CVT is the worst part.
As I did if that would’ve been a manual it would be a different story.
But a Nissan Altima, is being the American version of the Renault Latitude does have many flaws.
The Nissan Altima is a poorly built car that does have a lot of other issues caused by bad design. From electronics going rouge to A/Cs constantly falling this car, is probably one of the worst cars that can out of Japan.
The 2013 year of the Nissan Altima is probably one of the most unreliable Nissan there is. This is why it has a place on our Worst Cars list in the FAQ section.
@dan
The 2013 Nissan Altima has the JATCO CVT8 XTRONIC JF016E/JF017E
https://www.jatco.co.jp/wp-jatco/wp-content/themes/JATCO/assets/document/jatco_products_e.pdf
That’s the 3rd generation CVT, cross reference them with the 2nd generation and you’ll find they’re the EXACT same transmission. (They didn’t bother consolidating lineups to avoid loosing costumers like Mitsubishi and Renault)
JF016E ≈ JF009E
JF017E ≈ JF010E
Jatco didn’t care to resolve issues, in the true spirit of ALLIANCE they cared only about cost reduction.
Huh I guess you guys have a lot different experiences with them than I have especially with the v6 models there is not very many problems I see on a regular basis even the cvts hold up better than it’s 4cylinder counterpart and electronics they don’t have many concerns
My experience is from spending time in a tranny shop, we don’t get to see Ike’s that are lucky. Most of what I saw were A LOT of stupid and premature failures.
That car is already rolling pile of junk.
I would pass on it. You can take a look here.

Those years cvt in the v6 models didn’t have that many problems they were the stronger ones. If it was a 4cyl I would say be wary but those ones aren’t bad
Don't buy it. Look for a Camry or Corolla. The transmission is probably about to mess up on that thing.
