Keeping my old car or Upgrading?

Hello!

I currently own a 2005 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder with 116,00 miles on it. However, my parents are getting rid of their 2016 Honda civic EX T that has 90,000 miles on it. It's the turbo engine and they have had no problems with it. They are willing to give it to me for 5 grand. Should I keep my Camry or spend the 5 grand and get the civic?

Honestly, My mom has 435,000 miles on her 04 camry le 4 cylinder, and a few months ago someone asked if she wanted to sell it for 5k, and my mom turned the guy down, she should have taken the deal, but it is still lasting her now and into the future.

Wow LOL, that's a lot of miles. It's not a bad car, I'm in college and I just want a more fun car to drive. I think the civic would hopefully outlast the Camry haha.

If the Camry has given you no issues and running fine, I would keep the Camry - better the devil you know sometimes.

I see what you are saying. In the long run, I think the civic would outlast that Camry. I don't know for sure haha I'm not a big car guy. However, I bought that Camry last year, and my parents have had the civic almost all of its life. I know the history of the civic better. However, the Camry is a good car, for the year I've owned it's been good to me.

@Wfuchs, Actually, assuming the Camry was previously well taken care of, it will outlast the Civic! The 2016 Civic EX T is a 1.5L turbocharged GDI engine (L15B7) mated to a CVT transmission. For longevity, the Camry’s naturally aspirated engine mated to a regular automatic transmission will outlast it (assuming the Camry was well taken care of).  Also, more electronics and complexity on the 2016 versus the 2005 Camry, which creates pathways for more issues (potentially). The Civic with its engine/transmission combo will have more things potentially break down the line. That 1.5L turbo engine also had some oil dilution issues, so I recommend changing the oil every 5,000 miles on it! Also, it is direct injection only so is susceptible to carbon buildup - that you have to clean.  In any event, too bad you can’t keep both of them. If you could, I’d just do that.

$5k is pretty tempting, NGL. If you baby it, there could be a looooot of life in that car.

Agree, I’d get the Civic if I knew it’s full service history.

I do know the full history. The car was taken care of very well. It was owned by my mom most of its life.

I take it back. If the Civic has the Turbo GDI engine, and CVT then I wouldn't touch it. Keep your Camry

Get your parents car and sell it. Probably worth a lot more. I'd keep the old Camry though.

Update: I misread your question if it has no problems than definetly get the Civic is my opinion. If it has issues or if you don't like it, you could always sell it. Here in California, it would go for triple that.

Thank you! I think it will last a while. I think it would outlast the Camry due to its age and mileage.

If you want something more fun, Civic over Camry for sure!

Its going to be your vehicle, so I'd have a mechanical inspection done. Get all the maintenance and repairs up to date if it needs anything etc. Good luck! Thats an excellent deal.

I would take the bet on the civic because you know who drove it and sell your camry for 5 grand to get your money back. If you don't like the civic that is, just sell the civic for 10-12 grand and get a different car you actually like. But, remember, you will never get a car as good as your parents car and people will always lie to you when trying to sell you a used car. The civic is also faster, looks better, and has a more updated interior.

You are right and make good points! I think I am going to get the civic. Thanks for responding!

Seriously though, I'd keep the Camry.  Small Honda motors with turbos are going to be very costly in the future.  The fact that it has a turbo would negate it for me.

As much as I love Honda's, that is one sweet Camry.  I'd keep the Camry.  Heck, that's one of my favorite Camry designs.

With that said, that is a sweet deal for the Civic.  Maybe family discount?

Yeah, my parents only owe 6 grand left of it. They offered me to take over the monthly payments. I think it would outlast the Camry, I hope lol.

Cheaper to keep'er!

Very true, but I think the civic would outlast the Camry. IDK much about cars though haha.

Both cars are good cars. I'd probably make the switch to the newer Honda but I could respect your decision either way for sure.

I think I am going to buy the Honda. It is a good deal!
