Squirrel ate my wiring harness

My car started idling rough, yellow check engine light came on. Went to Autozone and did a diagnostic. Diagnostic said Ignition Control failure, Code 53. I took a closer look under the hood and the wires to the ignition control pack were cut. I figured they shorted or something. Took my car to Toyota and they said it needs a whole new engine harnesses and the repair will cost over Six thousand dollars. They said it looks like squirrel damage due to the soy based coating. Am I being taken for a long expensive ride?

Take the car to an independent mechanic and get another estimate.

Rodent damage is a real problem.

Replacing the harness is an incredibly labour intensive job.

The dealership is the most expensive place to get car work done.

Decon

Rubber snake

Do you have full coverage or at least comprehensive car insurance?  If there's a loan on the car, it's usually manditory by the people that financed it.  See if your insurance will cover it.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, wire stripper and shrink wrap tubing, or know someone who is, the wires can be re-attached by matching the color coding of the wires.  Be sure the wires are de-energized by disconnecting the battery before attempting.

Get ahold of an exterminator that can handle rodents to keep your wires from being severed again.
