Hello guys,
I own a 2015 CRV EXL model that now has 101k miles on it. I bought used with 62k miles and I have only service it at my local Honda dealer ( not so bad). I took my car for a tuned up about a month ago and a couple of weeks after that, I started to notice a few oil drops on my driveway ( never been there before). I took the car back to the dealer and they told me that the transmission has started to leak ( very minimum) in the trans case. at the time he said not to worry too much because it was minimal. They recommended to bring it back after driven another 500 miles. Well today I brought it back and they confirmed the leak and priced me an used (25k miles) transmission for $3160.00. Now I don't know what to do. I still owe $6k on the car but the car is worth about $13k. What should I do? should I fix it down the road or should I get rid of it?
I really appreciate your assistance. I am so confused right now because I know the way I take care of the car it could last a really long time.
Thanks

Does the transmission shift properly? Just like with medical stuff, get a second opinion. There are a number of reasons you could have an ATF leak that wouldn't involve replacing the transmission.
yes the transmission shifts fine. I have never felt anything weird with it. It is just about the leak. I should also mention that they told me that they have never seen of my CRV with the same problem. This last person sounded like it was her first time she's seen one with that issue
OK, question, couple actually:
First: How is your car driving, … how is your transmission acting, any different than you experienced driving it before?
Second: What part is it leaking from, … look carefully, describe in detail?
You see, your dealer should have provide you with substantial details why, at this junction, your transmission needs replacing. They have sophisticated scan equipment, they must have the results, they either know, … or they just guessing, a tech guy is just guessing. Pulling your leg, …
Anyway, … try to answer here my two question from above, … and we will take it from there. It’s absolutely immoral for a dealer to suggest, ‘Hey, bud, you need new tranny!’, … without convincing explanation. And if there is anexplanation, … care to share it with us here?
F.S.
I honestly have no issues with how the car drives. It drives really well. The CVT transmission feels like when I first drove the car. It drives fine. To answer your second question, what the first rep said t me was that the leak was in the trans case where it connects to the engine ( so I am guessing it is near the front). This whole issue started when I started to see some oil drops on my driveway about 3 weeks ago. They didn't even said anything about the oil level.
I say, … go back to a dealer, ask to speak with a service manager, ask him/her to substantiate his/hers tech’s previous diagnosis: codes tripped, detail explanation what they mean, ask for printouts, etc., etc. Don’t trust them one bit with their verbose at this juncture!
F.S.
I am looking at the paper they gave me this morning and it says: TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS LEAKING SLIGHTLY BETWEEN TRANS AND DIFFERENTIAL. I do not know if they ever put it thru a scanner or not. They did not say anything about any codes. I will give them a call but I don't think they did. I feel like they would have said something to me regarding no tripping any codes. Thanks
Just a quick thought: Is there an external damage or sign of something like that on transmission casing? What I’m thinking is, … transmission casing damaged (cracked, distorted, what have you ), obvious enough that transmission casing is shot, needs replacing, … and so, might as well replace the whole transmission!
If this is a case, … sure, dealer may be right, … just failed to communicate this. fwiw.
sounds like Honda is trying to rip you a new one
they are losing loyal customers
It is funny because I neve got the a bad vibe from this dealer. You can of know when they are trying to sell you stuff. I was the one who went to them when I noticed the oil leak on the driveway. But then again you never know
Did they show you the leak so that you could see for yourself? There is a saying “trust but verify” - demand to see it for yourself to confirm it is leaking there. Also, it may not be a bad idea to take to an independent, honest mechanic to get a second opinion.
There's just not enough diagnosis done by this dealer for such a radical suggestion. I concur with the need for second and third opinions.
I agree with you and I will get a second opinion. I have seen the leak on my driveway. I didn't have a single oil stain on my driveway, so to me the new oil drops on it was a sign that something started to leak. The few drops that I see it's all new. In my opinion it just started to leak. I have not issues how the the transmission is shifting, this is just about the new found oil stains.
You should also go through the TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) for this year and model (available @ carcomplaints.com) to see if there's any TSBs on these transmissions.
will do. thanks
