Engine misfires when cold

Good morning everyone so I have a 2015 Volvo S 60 2.0 t5 e drive. The mileage on the car is 129,220

so I decided to change my spark plugs in my car my coworker is a mechanic as his second job and he told me he can change them for me and that’s what he did

after that I’ve been getting a check engine light flashing so I brought a car to the mechanic shop by my house because he lives far away and they told me that I need to replace my spark plugs and my ignition coils so I went to AutoZone bought brand new spark plugs and ignition coils and I’m still having the same issue now I’m having a cylinder two misfire the first time was cylinder two and cylinder four now it’s just cylinder two misfire

so I brought my car to a different mechanic for a second opinion to see what they say and they asked me. When is the issue occurring I said the check engine light starts flashing only in the morning when the car is cold. Once the car warms up the issue disappears there is no issue. The car drives perfectly fine only in the morning, I’m having the issue on cold start otherwise the car drives perfectly fine. The second mechanic told me to go to AutoZone and buy a fuel injector cleaner to see if that fixes the issue drive with it for a few days and see what happens

but this morning I’m still having the same issue. I don’t know what else to try. They’re saying that since it’s happening in the morning, it cannot be the spark plugs or the fuel injectors because the issue would be happening all day, but it’s only happening in the morning so it’s definitely not the spark plugs or ignition coils . They’re saying that if the fuel cleaner doesn’t fix the issue then you might need a new engine

To avoid being ripped off, I suggest you go through our FAQ, watch Scotty's repair videos or ask for an advice before you start throwing your money away for nothing.

@g-t so the mechanics that I went to by my house I have been told by many people not to go there and I did anyways my father said an idiot pays double and why I didn’t go to my original mechanics that I go to for years so the next day I decided to go to my original mechanics and they did a couple of tests and said that it’s definitely not your spark plugs or your ignition coils since it’s only happening on cold start and when the engine warms up the problem disappears, they told me to go and buy fuel injector cleaner poured in your fuel and see if that changes the problem. Unfortunately, it didn’t. I don’t know what to do anymore.

I've been trying to parse through the dense wall of text that was posted. Some points stand out. First is that it appears the parts cannon approach is being used rather than proper diagnosis. That path rarely if ever produces a good result. Additionally:

I went to AutoZone bought brand new spark plugs and ignition coils

Did you install the make and model of plugs that Volvo recommends? Some engines are very picky about spark plugs. For critical parts like coils knock-off aftermarket parts frequently do not work well. OEM parts (or at least from the OEM supplier) should have been installed if any coils tested as bad.

I’m having the issue on cold start otherwise the car drives perfectly fine.

On a cold start the engine obviously needs more fuel than when it's warmed up. You should check your fuel trims for possible fuel injector problems.

The second mechanic told me to go to AutoZone and buy a fuel injector cleaner

What kind of fuel injector cleaner did you buy? They are not all the same. Scotty recommends PEA-based cleaners such as Techron.

They’re saying that since it’s happening in the morning, it cannot be the spark plugs or the fuel injectors because the issue would be happening all day, but it’s only happening in the morning so it’s definitely not the spark plugs or ignition coils

"They" don't know what "they" are talking about. On a cold start an engine needs additional fuel and a good hot spark.

As I said, you really should perform a full diagnostic scan. Spark plugs and ignition coils (as well as fuel injectors) have not been ruled out.

You should also have your battery, starter, and charging system load-tested. Cold starts put a heavy drain on the battery and strain the starter. (If the latter is worn it could be drawing too much current.)

They’re saying that if the fuel cleaner doesn’t fix the issue then you might need a new engine

I may have heard more nonsensical things in my time but this is right up with the top contenders. Saying that an engine might need to be replaced because fuel system cleaner did not solve a cold start problem is ridiculous. Compression and leak down tests, at a minimum, would be needed to make that determination.

Do a compression test on the engine and perform a leak-down test. Observe your findings. For example, if the compression test yields 90 PSI on cylinder 2 and around 120 PSI on cylinders 1, 3 and 4, you'd need a new engine. A properly functioning engine should remain within 10% of the cylinder with the highest compression in order to be considered acceptable.

You might want to perform a diagnostic scan for codes and live data.

I had a lot of trouble making out your story, but it sounds like you have a lot of very incompetent people in your area, calling themselves mechanics, who can't even fix a misfire. They have no idea what they're doing. "Mechanic as a second job" probably just means he fixes cars in his back yard once in a while. Instead of diagnosing, they just direct you to throw parts at a problem (in other words, "guessing"). They're cleaning you out. Stay away from all of them, especially the one who said you need a new engine.

they did a couple of tests

what tests?

now it’s just cylinder two misfire

focus on this cylinder. pull out the spark plug and visually confirm good spark.

Swap the injector around with one of the good cylinders.

More misfire info is in our FAQ so read it through.

The first time I bought the spark plugs on Amazon when I came to the First mechanic shop they said that my spark plugs were bent. I don’t know how that’s possible

Amazon is notorious for both cheap knock-off parts and counterfeit parts that are labeled as leading brands but are actually cheap knock-offs. Here's an example of Amazon spark plugs destroying an engine:

You still seem to be in the mode of throwing parts at the problem. Have any of the mechanics you've dealt with performed any actual diagnostics or are they just guessing?

The thing is before everything was done. Everything was fine. I did a tuna because there’s nothing was ever done on this car ever since I bought it and it had 129,000 miles so I bought NGK Spark plugs and the ignition coils I bought from AutoZone AutoZone brand The first time I bought the spark plugs on Amazon when I came to the First mechanic shop they said that my spark plugs were bent. I don’t know how that’s possible so I had to go to AutoZone and buy a new set of spark plugs. The same brand that I had bought on Amazon went back they installed everything for me and I was still getting the same issue. I left the next day. I went back to the same people and they’re saying that I might need to change my fuel injectors so I went To get a second opinion from my people that I have been gone for years so they told me that it’s not the spark plugs or the ignition cord because if it was, it would be give me the issue all the time, but it’s not so he told me to stop at AutoZone and buy fuel injector cleaner I bought royal purple He said drive for two days and see what happens but it’s still giving me the same issue
