I bought a 2016 Ford Focus, brand new and the odomoter was screwy from day one. While parked, it somehow racked up 300 miles overnight. The dealership didn't believe me, so I set Trip 2 timer to 0:00:00, Trip 2 miles to 0.0mi and drove it for a few weeks. (I don't drive much) According to the computer, it travelled 1836 Miles in 10 hours and 15 minutes. The dealership mechanic absolutely could not wrap his head around the problem as I'm trying to explain that It's a Focus, not an aircraft and he's trying to feed me some junk about how the trip timer also includes the time where the car is idling or not moving, not at all realizing he was impaling himself on the point while missing it completely.
ETA: The transmission also made horrible metal-on-metal grinding noises, and I was informed that was just part of the "Ford Experience" {black}:serious:
This post deserves its own thread..
https://i.imgur.com/hdi3J2i.mp4 Hey I found the vid I took to show to the mechanic, where he kept insisting there was nothing wrong! {blackemo}:laughtertotears:
If it gains miles when parked, it's very unlikely the wheel sensor input to your car's ECU/other computer module, it's the electronic module.
A high end scan tool would probably confirm this.
On the other problem, horrible grinding noises from a transmission? Usually that means that it won't last many more miles (well, maybe on your Ford "Quality is Job One" odometer it might).
They told me that it was a simple software issue and that if they updated it, things would be fine. They were in fact, not fine. {black}
If that's an automatic transmission it is the infamous Ford "PowerShift" dual-clutch trans that Ford defrauded millions of people with. They knew it was bad when it was designed and when it was sold, and continued to sell it anyway. There is no fix for it, I'm afraid.

On the other hand if it's a manual transmission and you're grinding gears the clutch may not be fully releasing.
It was that dual powershift piece of garbage, which I had traded in my 2013 Focus to get rid of, which was making the exact same grinding noises and randomly clunking into gear
It's really unforgivable what Ford did to their customers with that crap transmission, and they kept doing it for years with full knowledge of what they were doing. That odometer problem, I don't know, obviously bad electronics, probably bad computer.
It's not "Built Ford Tough" it's "Built Ford Fluff."
