2016 Subaru Legacy sitting for three years, steps for getting it running again?

Hello,

I have a 2016 Subaru Legacy with 74K miles. It has been parked since March 2020 (open to the elements). I have been taking care of my elderly mother out of state for three years and this is my first chance to return home to get my car running.

So far I have only changed the battery. The car started no problem, which was a good feeling. The car has sat through some winters so the engine has rust in some areas, as do the brake pads. The car has 3/8 tank of gas. As I understand it I should absolutely get an oil change. I’ve heard different stories about the gas. Should it be siphoned out or is it okay since there is almost 1/2 tank? The tires seem pretty good for sitting so long. What else should I expect needs to be done before I can feel safe about driving the car normally, or even on a short trip, again?

Thanks, JK

Absolutely get rid of that old gas and put some fresh gas in the tank. For safety's sake I'd change/flush the brake fluid. Give the tires a careful inspection or just take it to someone who can check them for you. Change oil and filter. Also wise to check/change the coolant. Depending on limit of your capabilities, might be smart to have someone give it a thorough safety inspection for your piece of mind.
