Hey Scotty:
I got a surprise today. My wife took her RAV 4 to the Toyota dealer to have her rear electrically operated hatch door troubleshot and repaired. When activated by the switch at the door or at the driver side dash, the hatch would open partiallly and then freeze in place without completing the open/close cycle. I'm figuring a faulty actuator or electrical component. She came home in a rental car and announced the service rep told her the struts and ball joints needed to be replaced to the tune of $4000. I'm thinking to myself what do struts and ball joints have to do with a hatchback operational problem? Could you set me straight so I don't wrongly lose it on somebody when I pick the car up in a couple of days. My wife says the Toyota Service people were aware of her problem because they were troubleshooting the car in front of her in the service bay for the same problem.
Stay away from the dealer and go to a good independent mechanic. Dealer "service advisors" are commissioned sales people highly motivated to upsell and even blatantly rip off customers.
