Watch your videos faithfully. Just joined website. I have a 2018 F150, 5.0 with 37K. Oil changes regularly at dealer. Recently experiencing cold start rattle. Worse when engine is warm and sits for only a few minutes. Just had dealer change oil & filter; Motorcraft 2W20 Syn and Motorcraft filter. Within about 100 miles, the rattle returns. Sometime just a rattle for 2 secs, sometimes it sounds like 2 skeletons doing the horizontal momba under the hood for 3-5 secs. Dealer reprogrammed per TSB 18-2534. Somewhat related, but not really. Now, I have always taken care of my own maintenance. I was in the industry years ago and since retirement, I have been doing more of it at home. I feel a new vehicle should be serviced by the dealer for documentation purposes in the event of a warranty issue. Now, my question is this...Lucas oil treatment...your opinion? I have used it for years on older high mileage vehicles and it has served me well. Would you recommend Lucas for this situation? While driving, I view live data (Ancel FX9000) and see no anomalies. Oil pressure fine, VCT seems fine, no misfires, etc. Your thoughts? Thanks in advance and keep the videos coming! Ed.
Saw this a while back. I am not experiencing the same issue. Motor relatively quiet seconds after start up. I do feel it is a VCT issue but it is much worse when the engine is warm and sitting for only a few minutes. The "cold" start seems to crank just long enough to bring the oil pressure up. Noise is minimal. If I flood start/crank for an extra 2 secs when warm, then lift my foot of the pedal, no noise. The kid that pulled my truck in at the dealer for NYSI, OLF, and alignment heard it and said WOW. After a couple dozen start/stops over the first 100 miles it was pretty quiet. Today, when engine warm, it sounded like my diesel tractor for about 3 secs. I was hoping the ADBV in the filter got sloppy. New Motorcraft filter 100 miles ago. I've only given the dealer one shot at this. But, from what I've been seeing, Ford doesn't really have a fix. With 37K, I can't imagine needing phasers, solenoids, chain, etc. The TSB didn't really apply in this scenario, in my opinion. Please forgive any of my ignorance. I am from the generation that had a stack of Chilton's manuals, carried cap, rotor, points, and of course duct tape in the glove box. Getting back into it these last couple of years I have had to re-educate myself as well as retire old tools to make room for new ones...expensive ones!
OK. Just watched Scotty's latest video on the Lucas oil stabilizers. I'll take his recommendation on NOT using it in a VVT engine with low miles. I'll continue the flooded start until the dealer comes up with another idea. What's another 2-3 seconds to start a vehicle. I will, however, try a couple different brands of oil filters. If anybody has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate hearing them. I'm new to VVT.
