Shaking and dash lights

Hello Scotty,

I was driving my 2018 Fiat 500; all of a sudden it started shaking and lights appeared on the dash. I had it towed to the dealership, I received an estimate for $2630 to replace the actuator. The dealer did not explain anything to me, just sent me a text message that included the diagnostic fee and the actuator fee. What does the actuator do and why is the repair so expensive? I've never spend $2600 at any dealership in one visit.

Thanks

It is the multi air actuator.

It looks like the OEM part itself at retail costs over $1400, so the dealer wold be charging you that plus about $1200 in labor:

More information is needed, like what codes were found and what "actuator" is supposed to be the issue. You need to get the details.

In general you want to stay away from dealers and chain shops and find a good independent mechanic. I'd get the car out of there.

I can't find a good mechanic in my area that is honest. It is the multi air actuator.

You can't count on the dealer being honest either and even if yours is one of the rare ones that is they will still be the most expensive option.

I asked my friends if they knew mechanics, I have some feelers out there. However, one mechanic has no idea what I'm talking about.

I did find this website and this part can be mailed to me- is it a reputable supplier?

I'm not familiar with that supplier. Be aware that most mechanics will not work with owner-supplied parts.

If it's not a warranty claim, get your car out of the dealership. Ask your friends for a mechanic they use.
