2018 GLC300 4matic vs 2017 Lexus rx350?

Scotty,

I know you're gonna say go with the Lexus but I wanted your thoughts on the 2018 GLC300 4matic with premium pkg inc burmester sound system. Being in Vancouver, Canada, I can't really see any screaming deals out there these days. I'm looking at both options from their respected dealerships. I'm getting both of these options in the mid $45K range. It seems I can get a newer Benz with less mileage (year 2018 with 25K KM) for the same price as a 2017 Lexus with double the mileage or similar specs but there are collisions in the history with a declaration of around $10K in damage. I've had my last car, 2003 C240 Benz (which I asked you for advise on last year about fixing the de-fog) for 18+ years and I don't think I'm going to go the distance with this new car and may just go for a lease and return after the lease is up. I have a company I can write off the entire lease amount so its a viable option vs financing. I'm just looking for a little more room then my sedan is offering yet I can still fit into smaller downtown parking spots where I work. I like smooth riding cars with nice sound systems and power when I need it. If you have any other suggestions for models that fit this bill, I'm listening.

Thank you kindly,

Kelly

I would avoid that particular 2018 GLC since it has a collision history.  Those machines are very complicated with their onboard computers and sensors that who knows if everything was fixed correctly esp. re-calibration of the ADAS system.  Not worth the headache even under lease/warranty.  I would never buy/finance the GLC, lease only esp. since you can write off.  Test drive and see which you like more, but it seems you like the GLC more so I’d lease that (just a different one).

Daywalker,

Thank you for the advice. Let me clarify, there are 3 models of GLC of similar year, KM, and specs, and all of them have no collisions. The Lexus Rx I was looking at, was either more expensive for same model year, mileage specs etc, or same price because they were the ones that had collision history. The comparable no collision lexus has to be 1 year older and more mileage to get into the same price point otherwise it was about $10K more. I would not chance a benz that was in an accident for sure but I might roll the dice on a lexus if it was a lesser accident like $2-3K damage. (This is all CDN dollars btw)

Thank you for clarifying. It’s not worth getting even the Lexus with the collision history as you don’t know what issues can surface later. I would just lease the GLC.

I agree. But is it worth just to pony up the money and get a clean Lexus or go with the slightly older model lexus and higher KMs to keep price consistent? I have driven both and both are miles ahead of what im driving. Overall, I think the seats are more comfortable in the lexus yet I like the drive of the GLC slightly better. Mind you, I only had about 10-15 mins in each car and would need longer drive to form a complete opinion. The tech seems overwhelming in the GLC too at the moment..

Me personally I’d go with the Lexus that is older and more mileage to save some money as they can last a long time still, esp. if it has a good service history. But not so with the GLC. For the GLC, you want to make sure it’s always under warranty, but the Lexus not as critical.

Thank you kindly for the prompt reply and sage advice. I'm gonna go dabble some more into the Lexi'
