Hey guys I am trying to decide between the 2 cars.
2019 Honda Insight LX
-Rebuilt (Damage was only in rear, engine was not touched)
-8,500 miles
-$13,000
-----------------------------------------
2014 Honda Accord LX
-Clean title
-49,000 Miles
-$9,500
I can almost guarantee %90 of people will say Accord is a safer bet.
1. Don't buy rebuilt title cars
2. Honda doesn't make good hybrids
3. The Accord is a good car and is clean title for a similar price
Get the Accord, of course, have a mechanic check it out before buying.
Definitely go with the 2014 Honda Accord LX with the 2.4L NA engine. You didn’t say how long you plan to keep and how many miles you are going to put on it, but if it’s for the long haul the Accord is your best bet. Hybrids are not good to own if you keep for the long term, plus being more complex you would have a tougher time finding a competent mechanic that can work on them if something goes wrong with the hybrid system, and I’d hate for you to have to go to the dealer for all the work.
Scotty usually isn't a fan of used hybrids. This is where I differ with him, because if you know what you are looking for and what to expect, deals can be found.
Assuming the 2019 Honda Insight uses the same hybrid system as the latest generation CR-V, I find it a compelling hybrid, even more compelling than a Prius or Toyota's system. This is not the old IMA hybrid (integrated motor assist) that Honda used to sell.
In the latest generation CR-V, it is more of an electric vehicle and less of of a hybrid, IMHO. The electric motor drives the car up to about highway speeds. And only the electric motor. The gas engine generates the electricity for the electric motor. The gas engine only powers the car at faster speeds, since it is more efficient for it to do so.
In traditional hybrids like Toyota's system, both the gas engine and the electric motor can share driving duties at the same time, and the gas engine can drive the car at almost any speed.
If the repair wasn't too extensive, personally, I'd take the risk on a third generation Insight (assuming it is the same system on the CR-V). They are cheaper than a Prius, and provides a compelling alternative. With that said, the jury is still out on this longevity of this car.
But the safer bet is the 2014 Accord. It has clean title, and probably no accident damage.
Assuming both cars check out of course.
