A few months ago I purchased an oil catch can for my 2019 VW passat.  I have installed it but after 5k miles there is no oil in the catch can.  Is this common? Did i perhaps not need to do this like i was led to believe?

Is your motor a GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection)? I know it is turbo, but not sure if it is regular injection or GDI.

The only time you "need" a catch can is when you have a car that is both forced induction AND GDI. This is because with direct injection, gasoline goes straight into the cylinders and does not wash over the valves to clean them properly. An oil catch can keeps the oil from building up on the valves and causing trouble down the road.

I couldn't find anything stating the engine you have is GDI, so of it is not then no you don't really need a can.
