Rear main seal leak - fix or replace car?

Hi Scotty,

Love the videos. My 2015 VW Jetta has 74k miles on it and it has oil leaking from the engine. The shop told me it was an intensive job because it is the rear main oil seal. I’m wondering if I repair this car or buy a used car that will have a longer lifespan.

I’ve been looking at Mazdas, Hondas, and Toyotas.

Any insight you have would be much appreciated. I can provide more info if needed.

Thanks,

Jake

I wouldn't keep a Jetta for very long.

I think that's a good plan

You can confirm it yourself by putting some UV dye that's meant for motor oil in the oil pan. The kit comes with funky sunglasses that brighten UV. Start the car and let it run for a bit. You'll find whatever is leaking. I would double check that something else isn't leaking oil, like a probable valve cover gasket. To me, that seems a little early for a rear main to be leaky. The shop may be trying to pull a fast one on you.
