2020 Tundra Weird A/C Noise

Hi,

Bought a new 2020 Tundra and I'm loving it so far, but I noticed this odd thing that happens randomly. When the vehicle starts up with the A/C on, or if you turn the A/C on after startup, there is a metallic noise, almost like a grinding noise. It rarely happens and it's hard to replicate, but it seems to happen when the truck has been sitting for a day or so. I've had it happen maybe 5 times and the truck has about 5,000km on it. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue and if they know what it is before I go to the dealer and try and get it fixed under warranty. I haven't been able to capture it on film (obviously it never happens when I remember to film it), but this other person's YouTube video covers it well.

Thanks

If there is humidity in the air in abundance, you may be experiencing flash rust on the two surfaces of the clutch for the compressor. It will quickly dissipate. If this is the case, you will also see slight rust on the surface of you brake rotors. The solution to avoid such noise may be climate controlled atmosphere in a garage with a fan running to see if it stops. It shouldn't make this type of noise. Only large amounts of build up of rust on older models has resulted in grinding noise with AC activation.

I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for the quick response, I hadn't considered the flash rust and I know what you mean about seeing it on brake rotors. The truck is parked outside and humidity was definitely present in the summer, but it has happened a couple times lately even with the cooler weather. I was checking around on the Tundra forum and one guy said Toyota replaced the compressor and clutch because the sound isn't normal.

Do you have any warranty on the truck form Toyota?

@yaser
I do yeah, but I was hoping someone may have experienced this, maybe even diagnosed the problem so I have something to reference when I go in. My fear is that I have to leave the truck there for a few days, they can't replicate the problem and it turns into a back and forth issue with the dealer. Just trying reduce the chance of frustration.

I understand your concerns. But regardless of the issue source, you want it to be fixed. In order to reduce the delay in repair, make a video while you see the issue and show it to them. It helps you to let them know where the issue is and reduces the diagnosis time. Maybe you better off showing the video to an independent mechanics to see what they have to say.
Good luck.

Thanks - I'll keep trying to capture it on video and start the process of talking to Toyota.
