Don't buy one. And if you are set on the Explorer then lease it and return it before the warranty ends.

It’s extremely difficult to know how reliable the Ford Explorer is going to be in the long run, because it is built on an entirely new platform, and has only been around a few years.

The problem with them seems to be in the new transmission, which was built in collaboration with GM.

One other concern is EcoBoost, which Scotty has covered countless of times.

The only one I would consider is the engine that comes with the police interceptor version of the Explorer. But it still has that potentially problematic transmission.

So would I be better off getting the 2010 2011 then because I'm not really worried about great gas mileage I want reliability with decent gas mileage

My personal preference would be with a Toyota Highlander or 4Runner.

With the Explorer, I really can’t give my rec on this generation or the previous generation. The only ond I would consider vetting is an Explorer with the specs of the “Police Interceptor”.

Well it depends on your definition of "decent gas mileage", but if you want reliability and you can afford it buy a brand new 4Runner; it's definitely reliable. Or if you want something smaller get a Highlander.

Like if I'm getting 28 city and 32 highway is nice but 22 city and 28-30 highway is decent but I had a 97 ford explorer and loved it so I though why not get another explorer brand new because I currently have a 2015 hyundai tucson se and I hate it if I fix one thing something else breaks and rinse and repeat I hate it vs the ford I had I just keep up with the basic maintenance and it fine

Hyundai and Kia are the exact opposite of quality. And while you were happy with your 97 Ford you won't be happy with the new ones. Just go with a 4Runner which has proven to be reliable.

I wouldn't buy anything new from Ford unless it was a 3/4 ton pickup.
