Hi Scotty, just learned about your channel and I love learning from you. I know you are a big Honda supporter and I'm in the market for a 7-8 seater SUV. I love the Honda Pilot but hate the current generation. I'm waiting for the new generation to be released but I can't find much out there. Do you have any information about the latest generation being released this year? I hear it's probably around October, 2022 when we will learn more.
Thanks!
Am not Scotty, But the 2023 is just a refreshed 2016. I would not get any Pilot made after 2020 as they switched all of their transmissions to the ZF 9 speed and they're very meh.
Looking on NHTSA, The transmission being the ZF 9HP is already causing issues (Such as in complaint ID 11407317 - "Right now it's only 2,500 miles and I feel I got a lemon I already have transmission problems") it also has the same issue as the VW Atlas with the parking brake randomly engaging while driving / collision avoidance acting in a dangerous way.
Honestly? a Highlander is almost flawless (DynamicForce 4 cylinder + DirectShift 8 speed) - I'd recommend getting that instead.
2023 isn't out yet. It probably would be major update with 10 speed that Honda puts in their other cars.
Both pilot and Highlander (even telluride) are basically minivan with more downs than ups. But Honda's AWD system, i-VTM4 sets it apart.
As things are clear now, 2023 is a redesign not refreshed 2016, it will most probably have new transmission and Honda is saying that it's getting new Engine too. It's strange how wrong answer is marked acceptable answer in here.
strange indeed. I'll unmark it.
getting new Engine too
It probably would be major update with 10 speed
According to MotorBiscuit:
"Until a hybrid version of the Pilot is offered, expect Honda to continue forward with the tried and true powertrain. This means the 2023 Honda Pilot SUV includes a 3.5-liter V6 engine attached to a nine-speed automatic transmission"
So no, the assertion of "probably" and "Honda says" are wrong - it is, as I said the same 9 speed that loves to blow up at random.
Only the hybrid will get a new-er powertrain.
2023 is a redesign not refreshed 2016
Context matters.
The "2023" called by dealers (as of March) at the time of you asking the question is a 2022, updated 2016.
The "new" 2023 revealed later, is somewhat new, seems to be related in a way to their new platform.
So the answer is correct for 03/03/2022.
I just did a quick Google search and there isn't much information available about the 2023 model yet. I would say if you want the Pilot wait for more information to become available (mainly transmission and engine info) and then decide. Or if you are willing to consider something else go with the Highlander either gasoline only version or hybrid. They're saying the new Pilot might come with a hybrid variant but obviously it's just a guess for now.
