Hello Scotty (and others) I’ve been tempted to get an f150 for a while but will not touch a modern 5.0L so I figure the 3.5L is the next best thing with way less issues and lemons my question is do y’all think the 3.5L powerboost will actually be a good truck? My impression is yes and I’m gonna wait a year or two to get one

I just see more complexity (and potential for issues) combining a 3.5L twin turbo charged V6 (3.5L Ecoboost engine) with a hybrid-electric system mated to a 10-speed AT (which itself has some issues).  Ford has never been known for making the best electrified powertrains (I.e. hybrids/plug ins) - the best long lasting ones are Toyotas.  So I remain skeptical of the Ford 3.5L Powerboost.  Also, the 3.5L Ecoboost by itself had a chain driven water pump that when it leaked could take out the engine, but I am not sure here with this setup if that’s still the case.  If it is, definitely avoid it.  Finally, if something goes wrong with the system it will be difficult to find a mechanic competent to work on it, not to mention costly, and if you have to go to the dealer they will charge a lot.  I really wish Ford would just fix their regular NA V8 and 3.5L Ecoboost engines and their 10-speed AT:   I already can’t recommend those as it is.

Yea I’m aware of the timing chain In the 3.5L but it’s still a 11 year old engine I feel the design has to have gotten better by now

I know the ten speed is starting to have issues finally being out for 6 years now, again it’s gonna get better. That’s why I’m gonna wait probably 2 years to see how the hybrid holds up if no major issues I’ll probably buy it unless there’s an EV on the market that you can plug your RV into

@back4blood if you are going to have the water pump driven off the chain and also internal to the engine it needs to never fail. But that’s not the case, unfortunately. It’s just a poor design and Ford has not made those water pumps fail-proof.  I would only own them under warranty.

I would pass. You would be a guinea pig for the new technology and I never advise that. Let them work the bugs out first.

There’s plenty of evidence that the F150 options are just plain weak all around. To add insult to injury you get a terrible 10 speed transmission as well. The only Ford trucks I’d even consider is the Super Duty line. The 6.2 or 7.3 gas monsters or the decent 6.7 Powerstroke.

Waiting a year or two would be a good Idea.  I do not think the Powerboost is the best engine in the bunch though.

My point is tho is it’s basically a 3.5L ecoboost which has been out for a dozen years now and seems WAY less problematic than the 5.0L

I see the 3.5L on YouTube getting over 200k and 250k miles multiple videos
