'92 camry idles and accelerates rough

Hi Scotty,

I have a 1992 toyota camry dlx manual transmission with 366,000 miles. It's been a little rough at idle, only when warm, for a few years, but recently this has gotten worse. In addition, recently its begun to vibrate if I push too far on the acceleration, and it feels like it loses power.

I took it to a mechanic who changed out the spark plugs and ignition coils. He also cleaned out the throttle body and idle air sensor. After that, he told me there wasn't really anything he could do other than start looking for bent valves in the engine.

So I took it to another local guy who said he thinks it's just an old computer and theres no fixing it. Neither of them mentioned the obdII codes to me, so I'm not sure about that. There are no check engine lights on the dashboard or anything like that.

Any ideas? I'd hate to have to get rid of this car. I was hoping to at least get it to 400,000 miles.

It sounds like to me, its the fuel pump going out. Does it stall when you accelerate hard?

Then again maybe dirty fuel injectors.

Hi all. I have had the fuel injectors cleaned by a mechanic. It could be the fuel pump though.

It is also possible that it could be the spark plugs and wires.

Hi billybob, sorry for the late response. I've changed all of my spark plugs and wires. I've also cleaned the fuel injectors. It does get rough when I accelerate though. So maybe the fuel pump.

Yup, change the fuel filter & pressure test the fuel pump.

Your car is pre OBD2, so you’ll need an OBD1 scanner to read any codes.
