93 Chevy 3500 with 454 big block.

Scotty, I have a chevy 3500 with a 454 big block engine. I bought it for mostly pulling a 30' about 7,000lb. camper. I've come to find out though that this engine only has about 230 to 260 hp. So when I've come to a decent hill I would have the gas pedal 75% down and maybe doing 45 mph. Anyway I was told that if I were to change the heads on this 93, 454 engine that it would increase my hp by about 100. What are your thoughts on this.

Thanks

Trevor Hodge

There are some other things you can do to try to get power back in your 1993 7.4L before putting $$ into it.  When was the last time it had a tune up?  It might not have points & condensor, but spark plugs still should be changed per manufacture's recommended interval. Heat and age does affect other ignition parts like plug wires and distributor parts.  Does it have a lot of miles such as over 200K?  A compression check would be in order. Worn rings & valves can cause loss of compression and therefore loss of power.  What shape is the fuel system in?  Could be starving for gas trying to climb that hill. Check fuel pump pressure, change fuel filters, clean or replace the throttle body injector.

If you love this truck and the body is in decent shape but the engine is worn you could look for an 1994-95 454 engine with lower miles to replace it with.

Well thought out response

Well you could try that it's expensive thing I realize it's an old truck you put high performance heads and let's say another cam in the engine you might wear the rest of the engine out it's pretty old
