I have owned the vehicle for almost 3 years with no issues other than maintenance. There are 252k miles on the truck, but has been a good every day driver. Yesterday, I had started it up in the morning perfectly fine, did some running in town, when I ran inside the truck shut off. Went to start it and just cranks. It had 1/8th of a tank, but thought maybe the gauge was off since I have never had it that low. Put in 2 gallons and still nothing. I waited a few minutes and fired right up, but 2 minutes later died. 5 minutes later, started up and drove to the gas station like nothing was wrong. Then I went home, parked it for a few hours. Went to go to the store and it died at a stop sign and would not start again. I ended up getting towed home. Plugged in the heat plug and a trickle changer on it since I had drained down the battery. 3 hours later, it started right up, ran for 15 minutes, so I thought I could take it around the block and see how it drove. When I turned on the headlights, the truck died instantly. Got a new fuel filter and replaced it think if the tank was low enough, the filter would be full of crud. Attempted to start it, nothing. Five minutes later started right up. Drove it up and down the drive for ten minutes or so then it died. Today I went out there and it fired right up, ran for 10 minutes and died. Finally got out the paper clip and got the trouble codes. Codes are 35, 54, 67, 81, and 82. Anyone have any idea how the truck could turn from a daily/maintenanced driver to not starting.
Fuel pump kicks in every time I turn the key. I had a second person listen and hear it hum every key turn. Battery shows 14.6v and is only 3 months old. Alternator has been replaced last summer. I tested for spark after it shuts itself down with a spark plugs connected to the coil and nothing until it sits for 15 minutes. I just replaced the coil today and same symptoms. I was told by a friend to check the ICM. Would that possibly shut the truck off?
Now it seems like I am having an issue where it will start for a few minutes, between 5-10 minutes sometimes shorter. I just changed cap and rotor. After that it started instantly. Ran good for one day. Now back to intermittent starting, but still won't run over 10 minutes. When it does run now, it runs at a low rpm, chugs a bit, then gasps for air and dies. So as of now, fuel filter, ignition coil, cap and rotor have been replaced. Also had a long enough chance of it running to get the timing set.
@inthrustwetrust is right. Are there any other electrical issues while this is going on? It might pinpoint the alternator. Otherwise I'm guessing it is fuel related.
Start with watching Scotty’s video on how to fix a car that cranks but won’t start.
Have you pressure tested the fuel pump? Sounds like it’s on it’s way out & overheating after a short while. Then starts working again when it cools down enough.
Also load test your battery & alternator just in case.
