1996 Camry DX Automatic 4 cyl

VIN - JT2BG12K8T0364706

219,000 miles

Good morning,

I have a code P0500 concerning the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). I have replaced this sensor with 4 new sensors with 3 different brands, the last and newest being the most expensive and most known brand, NTK. ALL 4 sensors have failed. 2 have failed immediately while the other 2 fail at around 60 miles. The first sign of code P0500 returning will be a prolonged 1st gear. Once it finally shifts to 2nd the engine light will come on reading P0500.

I have also tried replacing the connector before the last sensor was installed. That also did not fix anything other than a new gasket and clip.

I took it to a reputable shop but all they told me was to fix a leak because it may have been hindering the sensor's operation. I found that to be false because the sensor and connector were dry at the connection.

So currently the speedometer is still working. The transmission is in limp mode. The speed reads '0' on the scan tool, but every time the sensor was replaced before the engine light came back on, the speed read correct on the scan tool.

Please help!!

the mounting could be messed up, or maybe the toothed wheel in the transmission is chewed up. Also double check the wiring.

The mounting hardware is ONE whole bolt and it’s tight. The wheel is fine unless somehow it’s the wrong pitch or number of splines. The wiring seems fine but I’m definitely not an electrical expert. So I’ll probably just take it to a different like I originally planned.

are metal shavings building up on the sensor?

not at all. if i had seen that, any of the FOUR times i changed them out, my heart wouldve dropped and i wouldve sold the car.
