Hello I have a96 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0. Full time 4 whee drive Automatic with 260.000.miles privatelyowned. With just 4 high and 4 low on the 4by 4 kever I put a use transmission an torque converter in it oh roughly 8 years ago. Every once in a while if just jump in it an back out drive without letting it warm up any an put it in drive it would take it a min to go in gear. Ok the other day my wife has driving it and it just stopped moving! The fluid look good as always didn't smell burned still nice an pink. I thought the 4by4 lever popped into neutral like it has before an I adjusted the lever. When my brother put gearshifter in drive or reverse any gear I shoved on 4b4 leaver and I made a little grind noise not bad. I pulled Trans cooler line it pumping fluid good. I dropped the transmission pan . It had quite a bit more stuff in it metal skinny specks and stuck ro filter good or bad I mean. So I don't get it. it want go into any gear at all except when it's cold then just for a second. When runs a minute want do nothing. It's done this out-of the blue no warning at all wife said she hears nothing no noise at all. I really think the torture converter went out what u think? I can one rebuilt from car parts and 2 filters fir 59.00 is it worth trying it ? Thanks jeff
P well sad to stay up at the transmissions going out. The only thing that can make them jump out of gear like that is they're breaking down internally and need rebuilding your lucky the used one you put in lasted so long
Hello scotty thanks so much for getting back to me I really appreciate it. I didn't mean it jumped out of gear tho it just stopped going like u put ut in natural. I've had a chance to look it over and I've checked couple basi things one is the torque converter is still bolted to the fly wheel 2. I took Trans line loose and the pump is pumping really good 3 I pulled the transmission pan and there's no pieces of anything in but there's a lot more shiny tiny partials in it than there normally is. Before removing pan and all I started it and cold first starting it actually went into all the gears fine until it ran a minute then it stopped going into any gear again. I can get a rebuilt torque converter and 2 filters for 50.00 so I'm banking on the converter has gone out. Oh and yes it did 8 years long time for used transmission to last. Do u think it's possible that the converter has just gone out. ? Thanks again jeff
The shiny metal particles are probably the gears of your transmission
